Homeschooling around Des Moines: the money that does and doesn't apply

Iowa's ESA does not fund homeschooling, but homeschool families are not shut out of state help. Here is what applies to a Polk or Dallas County homeschooler in 2026-27.

Can a Des Moines homeschool family use the Iowa ESA?

Not while homeschooling. The ESA can only be used at an Iowa accredited nonpublic school with full-time attendance. A homeschooled student who enrolls full time at an accredited school can apply, including in the half-year window that closes November 15, 2026.

What state help does a homeschooler get?

The Iowa tuition and textbook credit: 25 percent of up to $2,000 per child in qualifying costs, up to $500, because dependents receiving private instruction in Iowa are covered.

What changed for homeschool instructors in 2026?

House File 2754, signed May 12, 2026, removed the limit of four unrelated students for independent private instructors and the ban on charging tuition or fees for homeschool instruction. That opens the door to paid co-ops and small programs, but they still do not receive ESA money unless they become accredited schools.
