Is there free preschool for four-year-olds in Des Moines?

Yes, through the Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program, which funds at least 10 hours a week of preschool with a licensed teacher. Districts can deliver it in their own buildings or through community partners, including nonpublic and faith-based programs.

Can it be at a private school?

When the private school is a partner of its public district. 21 private schools in our data report a pre-K class; ask each one whether its four-year-old room is an SWVPP partner classroom and what extra hours cost.

Who gets help paying for child care?

Families at or below 160 percent of the federal poverty level when they apply (200 percent for a child needing special-needs care), with parents working at least 32 hours a week or in training. Iowa HHS runs the program.
